Alcove Trails Football Team Recognizes Teachers Making an Impact

The Alcove Trail Football Teacher of the Week initiative began as a way to strengthen the relationship between the athletics program and classroom teachers while highlighting the educators who make a lasting impact on student-athletes. Each week, football players vote for a teacher through a Microsoft Form, allowing them to recognize someone who has encouraged, supported, or challenged them.

The selected ATMS staff member receives a certificate explaining their impact on the athletes, along with a football jersey to display in their classroom and wear throughout the week. Students are able to nominate their current teacher or previous teachers who continue to encourage and support them.

"Our athletes spend more time in this building with these teachers than they do with their own parents on any given day," said the eighth-grade football coach, Matthew Bruce. "I think it is important for us to show gratitude because many times, teaching is a thankless job. If we can brighten the day of one staff member each week, then we are building a place of investment, collaboration, and hopefully joy."

The eighth-grade football players said their Teachers of the Week have a positive impact on their school experience by making learning more approachable and encouraging them to overcome challenges.

“They help out in the classroom by answering questions and helping us push through struggles,” said Aydon Saenz.

Jackson Sutlive added that the teachers they recognized have been some of the best educators he has had at Alcove Trails, with a hands-on approach and engaging lessons.

When describing the qualities of a Teacher of the Week, Grayson Perdomo explained they were caring, kind, motivational, helpful, challenging, and uplifting.

For Sarah Denning, a seventh-grade reading language arts teacher selected for the recognition, the experience was a meaningful reminder of the impact teachers have on their students.

"It was such a nice surprise to be selected for the Teacher of the Week by the football players! At the end of the day, everything we do is for our students. It means so much to know that kids appreciate their experiences in our classrooms!" said Denning.

She also praised the coaches and athletes for reinforcing the importance of classroom success and creating a positive culture within the athletics program.

"Receiving that honor has been the highlight of my semester!" said Denning.

Through this weekly recognition, Alcove Trails football players are learning that the people who support them beyond the field deserve just as much appreciation as those who coach them on it.
